Tucked away in the beautiful Grand Arcade in Leeds City Centre, Just Grand! Vintage Tearooms allows you to take a trip down memory lane. Tables are adorned with china teacups, waitresses wear polka dots, vintage umbrellas hang from the ceiling and 1950’s music plays through the speakers.
My Nan sadly has dementia and I couldn’t have chosen a better spot for us to visit when she came up to Leeds with my Dad. She sometimes struggles to keep up with the conversation due to her short term memory loss but on entering the tearooms, it was like stepping back in time and she could recall all the little quirky items that she recognised from back in her day, such as an old fashioned television and game console. On arrival, the staff were so lovely and welcoming as they ushered us over to the ‘Buddy Holly’ table. Nan was thrilled, instantly recognising him. The menu’s are printed on the front of LP vinyl records and you can choose from an array of drinks and light bites. To quench your thirst, they offer speciality teas, cafetiere coffee and ice cream milkshakes. If you fancy a bite to eat, the tearooms have a variety of home baked cakes and scones to satisfy your sweet tooth.
We only stopped by to warm our cockles, but Just Grand! also offer Afternoon Tea and it is definitely something I’ve got on my bucket list now that I’ve seen the place. Finger sandwiches and freshly baked cakes are served on a delicate 3 tier china plate stand, alongside endless brews (who can complain about that?!). If tea and cakes aren’t your bag, they offer a Gentleman’s Afternoon Tea – local bottled bitter, pork pies and a plain packet of crisps (served with a salt bag like the old days).
There really is something for everyone at Just Grand! Vintage Tea Rooms. As the website suggests, it is quintessentially British and with the decor matching that of your Nan’s living room, it is a heartwarming, nostalgic place that makes you feel at home from the moment you walk through the door.
